Estimating the price of gas
Experts estimate that if gas prices continue to rise at their 15-year historical trend, the estimated average price of gas over the next 8 years will be over $5.34141 ¢/L.
Maintenance savings
Due to the infrequent use of the gas engine, engine wear, service and maintenance are expected to be significantly reduced resulting in 3 times less engine maintenance costs. Due to the use of regenerative braking, (slowing down the vehicle by generating electricity using the electric motor) brake service intervals should increase by 3 times resulting in lower brake maintenance costs.
Transmission, alternator and other high-wear parts have been removed, resulting in fewer service and replacement costs. This reduced maintenance allows the VTRUX a lease life of 8 years. The formula above assumes a new lease of a new stock truck starting in year six for the conventional gas version.
Estimating the cost of electricity
The cost of electricity is based on the industrial national average rate which also closely tracks with “off peak” or EV consumer rates. Average cost of electricity for night-time charging at the industrial rate is $0.065 per kWH. For example: The extended cab VTRUX travels on average 2 miles per kWH. Using the average retail rate for electricity of $0.10 per kWH, the truck uses $.05 a mile$.02 a kilometre.
Idle time
Did you ever wonder why the estimated MPG and your actual MPG differ so much? One reason is idle time. Due to heavy traffic, stop & go driving, and waiting with engine on, a lot of gas can be burned while not actually moving. This is called “Idle Time.” We have used an estimated national average of 20% “Idle Time” in the calculation above. EPA sticker MPG estimates do not consider Idle time from rush hour traffic or other situations common to many drivers. It can sometimes take twice as long to commute the same distance in rush hour traffic. Working vehicles sometimes park and idle for hours to stay comfortable in hot or cold weather. You can determine your “real world” MPG and estimated idle time by entering in your actual mileage and gallons in this section.
